横浜市英語塾 Maybe more coherent thoughts on civilization
Humans have found out that they are more successful as a group than as individuals. Hunting, farming, building stuff, running a business, etc... All these things can be done by an individual, but efficiency increases as people can start specializing in certain occupations. Humans have basically evolved to rely on others to cover their deficiencies. Not a problem so far. Of course, as the population increases, there are bound to be a few people that just don't fit well into the society, which means, they don't really add a benefit to the group, they chafe at the norms that the group has decided on, or any other quirk of character that makes them different. But since they were born into the group, they can be trusted to a certain degree.
Sometimes though, strangers bearing gifts ask for entrance into the group. The gift could be physical, but most probably a skill or important piece of information. Well, of course you can come in! We can all benefit from this addition to our humble family!
But strangers running from something and only looking for some safety and respite? If we have the surplus, we might be able to find a place for you. But you are going to need to understand how we do things over here and try not to rock the boat.
Following that line of logic, it seems that affluent societies would be the most welcoming of strangers, but I wonder if history agrees with me?
人間は、個人としてよりも集団として成功することがわかっていま す。 狩猟、農業、物の建設、ビジネスの経営など...これらすべての ことは個人でも行うことができますが、人々が特定の職業に特化し始 めると効率が向上します。 人間は基本的に、自分の欠点を補うため に他者に依存するように進化してきましたと思う。 今のところ問題 はありません。 もちろん、人口が増加するにつれて、社会にうまく 適合できない少数の人々が存在するでしょう。つまり、彼らはグルー プに実際の利益をもたらすわけではなく、グループが定めた規範に不 満を持つ、または特徴のキャラクターを持っています。 でも集団に 生まれたからにはある程度は信頼できる。 しかし時々、贈り物を持った見知らぬ人がグループへの入場を求めて きます。 贈り物は物理的なものである可能性がありますが、おそら くスキルまたは重要な情報です。 あ、もちろん入っても大丈夫です よ！ 私たちは皆、この家族の一員として恩恵を受けることができま す。 しかし、見知らぬ人たちは何かから逃げて、安全と休息だけを求めているのでしょうか？ 余剰があれば、あなたのために場所を見つけることができるかもしれません。 しかし、私たちのやり方を理解し、波を起こさないように努める必要があります。 この論理に従うと、裕福な社会は見知らぬ人を最も歓迎するように思 えますが、歴史と一致しているのだろうか？
