In 1973, NASA launched Skylab into orbit following the Soviet Union's Salyut-1 space station (1971).  The first Skylab missions were much more successful than the first Salyut misisons, but the project was eventually abandoned after NASA folded their space station projects into the upcoming International Space Station Project that was launched in 1998.

While most attention is on Mars now, it is good to know that new space station projects are being planned now to act as stop over points to reaching the Moon and Mars, as well as opening up the space tourist industry!
